Did you know that more than 500 products sold in the U.S. since 2008 contain ingredients banned from cosmetics in Japan, Canada, or the European Union? One in five of all products contain chemicals linked to cancer. Eighty percent contain ingredients that commonly contain hazardous impurities.
Look at Your Products
Let’s talk ingredients. Take a look at some of the products you use every day. The ingredient list is often a long slew of words many of us don’t know or can’t pronounce. Many ingredients are harmful to our families.
When you put something on your skin, it doesn’t stay on the surface. The skin can absorb up to 60 percent of what goes on it into the bloodstream. And those chemicals you can’t pronounce? Yep, right into our bloodstream. What makes this even scarier for me as a mom is these chemicals are found in unborn babies. A study done by the EWG, found an average of 287 chemicals in blood samples from newborns. Of the 287 chemicals 180 are known carcinogens in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development. Yikes!
What chemicals should be avoided?
If you can’t pronounce it you probably shouldn’t put it on your skin. Let’s start with a few chemicals to watch out for that are commonly found in personal care products.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate
These ingredients are cleansing product additives that create a foam/lather. They are used to clean engines, garage floors, and in car washes. They are also present in body washes, soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, and laundry detergent. These have been linked to neurotoxicity, organ toxicity, skin irritation, and endocrine disruption.
DEA (Diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), TEA (Triethanolamine)
Ethanolamines are ammonia compounds used in cosmetics as emulsifiers or foaming agents. These three chemicals are hormone-disrupting chemicals with a strong link to liver and kidney cancer. They are commonly found in shampoos, soaps, bubble baths, and facial cleansers.
This is a scary one because the word fragrance is so ambiguous. Companies can label hundreds of synthetic chemicals as fragrance. Most “fragrances” or “parfum” can be hormone altering, and can cause reactions like wheezing, asthma and more. Fragrances can be found in almost everything so they are hard to avoid.
What Should We Do?
